Things to do on Lewis and Harris
Salmon and Trout fishing in the Hebrides is rated amongst the best Scotland has to offer, why not give it a go? The Gress and Coll rivers are close to Surf View and ideal for Salmon and Trout fishing. Permits are needed for some, but not all rivers, so please check before you go.
Have you ever tried saltwater fly fishing? This relatively new sport why not give it a shot, or take a day sea angling in some of the richest waters in the UK.
Wildlife and Bird watching
Whale and Dolphin spotting.
One of the best places to spot whales and dolphins is from Tiumpan Head Lighthouse (Eye Peninsula) you can look out for Killer Whales, Risso’s and White-Beaked dolphins, along with Harbour Porpoises and Minke Whales, with some sightings year-round depending on weather and sea conditions.
There is a very steep track to the top of the hill, but it is the best vantage point. Quite often there are members from the Whale and Dolphin Trust ‘watchers’ on duty, they are happy to offer you lots of info on ‘what’s about’.
Gallan Head – Whale and Dark Skies
Gallan Head is in a remote area of Uig. Bought by the community, they have set up a Whale listening centre. It is also a great place for wildlife and birdwatching, especially White Tailed Eagles and Golden Eagles.
Go on a Golden Eagle Walk led by the North Harris Ranger Scheme and RSPB Scotland. The walks take place every Wednesday from April to September. In 2014 there was a 95% success rate of seeing eagles on these walks.
